The Alpine Meadows Freestyle & Freeride Team was founded by Head Coach Clay Beck in 1995. It is operated independently of the mountain by Tahoe Athletic Adventures. The program serves as a part of the development pipeline for USSA, the U.S. Ski Team as well as other professional freestyle & freeride ski events. If you can comfortably ski the whole mountain, you are ready to join. The program helps younger skiers develop critical skills and discipline, yet also offers upper level training and support for national and international competitors. AMFT has been a very successful program. It was voted Freestyle Program of the year in 2002. At the 2006 Freestyle Junior Olympics, Alpine Meadows Freestyle walked away with more medals than any western U.S. team, including overall gold medals in skier halfpipe, big air and women's combined events. AMFT skier David Wise was the gold medalist in superpipe at the 2007 USSA Nationals at Killington. Training is available to both "weekend warriors" and full-time athletes. The program strives to produce well rounded skiers that can do everything well. Skiers train for big mountain, moguls, aerials, big air, halfpipe and slopestyle events. The team trains primarily at Alpine Meadows. Some athletes also train at Boreal Mountain Resort, California's premier terrain park & superpipe! On normal days, athletes meet for stretching at 8:15 near the lodge fireplace. Skiers are on the slopes with coaches from 9 to 11:30; have lunch on their own and return to slopes with coaches until 3. Midweek atletes train 3 or 4 days per week from 1 to 4. The majority of our athletes compete on the USSA Far West Freestyle circuit from December through March. A large number of athletes also compete at higher level FIS and professional events such as the U.S. Open, Freestyle Junior Olympics, USSA Nationals, FIS NorAms and the World Superpipe Qualifiers. Alpine Meadows Freeride has been a leader in pushing skier halfpipe to the next level. At the 2005 Nationals, 13 of 50 riders came from Alpine Meadows. Clay and the AMFT production staff have played a big role in bringing the NorAm Halfpipe Championship series to Tahoe in 2005 and again in 2006. |
